Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
