In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
