Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any major awards ceremony approaches, one notices a clamor for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
